Talking Clean Energy – 15 August 2012

Broadcast on Radio Print Handicap (RPH) Australia Segment 28: 15 August 2012 EMMA JANE: Hello again and welcome to another week of Talking Clean Energy. We’re glad you could join us. BARRY: On the program we’ve talked about the four pillars of Australia’s plan for a Clean Energy Future… EMMA JANE: …The first is using less energy — otherwise known as energy efficiency! BARRY: The second pillar is investing in new energy sources, like renewable energy and clean technology. EMMA JANE: Then there’s action on the land — like the Carbon Farming Initiative, and of course…. BARRY: … The price on carbon… All of these strategies are aimed at reducing carbon pollution and global warming. But the fact remains that some greenhouse gases stay in the atmosphere for about 100 years. So some climate change is unavoidable. EMMA JANE: Which brings us to the topic for today’s program: Adapting to climate change. Did you know, Barry, that most of the change in climate over the next twenty to thirty years is already locked in? BARRY: Yes. It’s due to the lag between the build up of greenhouse gas emissions and increases in global temperatures. The critical issue is to stop the situation getting worse and begin to adapt to the changes that are already underway. Remember, the world needs to limit global warming to a temperature rise of no more than 2 degrees Celsius. EMMA JANE: So, what do we need to do? BARRY: For a start, we need to work together, EJ.
